Perl Scripting Book

It looks like my Perl Scripting book made it out just in time for Christmas!

Oddly enough, it only seems to be available on Amazon...I can't seem to locate it on the Syngress site, but I did find it on the Elsevier site (Elsevier owns Syngress).

Perl Scripting for IT Security is not a follow-on or companion to my previous book, Windows Forensic Analysis. Rather, it goes more into showing what can be done, and how it can be done, in the world of Incident Response and Computer Forensics Analysis using an open-source solution such as Perl. The book, in part, shows that with a little bit of knowledge and skill, we are no longer limited to viewing only what our commercial forensic analysis tools show us.

Addendum, 28 Dec: A box showed up on my doorstep today, with several copies of the book! Woot!

Looks good, but how much experience with Perl do you recommend readers have before getting this book?

You do need some experience...for example, installing Perl, and running scripts.

Hi Harlan

It's also available on Amazon.co.uk (for UK readers) at a good discount - but with a 2 to 4 week delivery estimate.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Perl-Scripting-Security-Response-Monitoring/dp/159749173X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1198835436&sr=8-1

I've ordered my copy :)

Ah, very cool! As it turns out, it looks like you'll get your copy before I get mine! I have been unable to reach the publisher to get a copy of my own book! ;-)

I hope you enjoy it...

Glad to see you're sharing your knowledge of Perl with us. It seems you've been pretty busy!

That should read, Glad to see you're still sharing your knowledge of Perl with us.

Point well taken. If I enjoy this book as much as I did the last, I'll be very pleased. If I hurry, I might even get to post the first Amazon review!

It's not described correctly by Amazon. It's 197 pages not 418 :)

I've sent them a correction notice about that and also the title (Windows not IT)

I'm a bit angry that Syngress don't have the download links set up yet - I don't fancy re-typing all of your perl code!

Anyway it looks quite useful - many thanks for writing it.

FG,

Have you communicated your frustrations to Syngress in any way? You're not the first person to be frustrated by this...you bought the book, and while it isn't right, it is definitely something that should be addressed.

Just be glad you're not an author!

Hi Harlan,

Are the scripts available for download?

H. Carvey said...

Yes, they are...once you purchase the book you should get information about that from the publisher...

Hi Harlan,

Does it require registering the book at Syngress.com? I tried but got this error:

"We're sorry, there has been an error on the system. Syngress staff has been notified. "

I have the book but the scripts are still not available from Syngress :(

When I was looking for them I did find a PDF version of the book on a hackers web site. It's really bad that Syngress don't support legitimate customers and the bad guys beat them to it......

Gents,

This isn't the first I've heard of this. I'll notify the publisher, but I have to admit that sadly, I have nothing whatsoever to do with the book once it's published.

I am sending of an email to the publisher, and will call them later this morning...thanks for the heads up.
